However, despite occasional visitors, the Sunday mornings have continued to be very few in number in terms of who gather, and as such I do not feel that it can reasonably be described as a 'church' for the time being! So for now, I've revised the description on the Honiton SGC page and renamed the meetings as 'Honiton Sovereign Grace Meetings'.

Though our Sunday meetings are tiny in number (and now fewer than when we began) we still thank the Lord for His goodness towards us over the past year as we have looked to Him to bless the preaching of His word, to His glory alone. Whilst we cannot tell what the future holds, we nevertheless know that it is Christ alone who builds His church, that He uses His gospel to build it, and that wherever He sends forth His word it never returns unto Him void.

...And if you have a love for that gospel, or perhaps a desire to hear it for the first time, then we do of course extend a warm welcome to you to the meetings at Awliscome.

Sunday 27th September

There will be no meeting as usual in Awliscombe at 10:45am this coming Sunday (27th September) with the meeting being held at another time that day. The Gough’s appreciation for the faithful preaching of the gospel was further demonstrated by the fact that this year they first travelled north to the New Focus conference in Egglesburn, before driving the Fortners back to Wolverhampton, and then following those meetings, driving them all the way down to Sidmouth for our own conference.

Following the meetings in Sidmouth, however, Jim had to undergo heart surgery, following a period of poor health. Two days after the surgery the Lord was pleased to call Jim home. We heard of this with heavy hearts, being full of sorrow for Jim’s family and friends, whilst rejoicing with Jim himself who is now with the Lord he loves. We will miss his fellowship.

When he heard about Jim, our brother Don Fortner wrote the following tribute:

A Tribute to Jim Gough
(1942 – 2009)

Shelby and I met Jim and Eileen Gough two years ago in Wolverhampton, England. Our hearts were immediately welded together in the sweet fellowship of the gospel. The Lord took our friend home to Glory Friday night. Very few who read our bulletin will even know the name of this man; and you may be wondering why you are reading about him now. The reason is this: Our God teaches us to give “honour to whom honour” is due. Jim Gough is a cherished friend and was (while he lived on this earth) a faithful servant of God.

Jim was an elder at West Park Evangelical Church in Wolverhampton; but that hardly tells the story of his service to Christ and his people. The West Park Church was formed when Jim, Eileen and a few others saw the need to establish a gospel witness in Wolverhampton. He was devoted to the cause of Christ, frequently preaching the gospel at West Park and in other area chapels. Just last week, he and I spent some time discussing one of his new projects: translating and publishing good books in various Indian dialects.

Though my time with him was very limited, I never spent an hour in the company of Jim Gough that was not edifying and profitable to my soul. What higher compliment could one man give to another? Our mutual friend, Bro. Syd Buggins, wrote to me this morning, saying…

“His whole conversation, especially during the last few years, was all of Christ. He could not pray or preach, but it was full of his Saviour. May we be able to say truly, ‘the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.’ ………… but O the loss!”

Jim and Eileen opened their home, their hearts and their lives to two strangers from America two years ago. They followed us all over England, insatiably absorbing every word preached. When we arrived in Egglesburn this year, we were delightfully surprised to learn that they had (along with Syd and Joan Buggins) rented a van to drive us from meeting to meeting, making it possible for the six of us to spend many hours together discussing the things of God.

One of the last things we spoke of was the fact that so few who preach, preach Christ. Jim was a soft spoken man who hated conflict and went out of his way to avoid confrontation; but his heart was heavy as he spoke. Yet, he spoke with animated excitement as he encouraged me in the blessed work of the gospel. The very last thing he said to me, as we parted company one week ago was, “Bro. Don, be sure to thank your beloved congregation at home for sending you to preach Christ to us.” — Bless God, soon, we shall meet to part no more!

Don Fortner

Grace Hymns

I've begun to produce a new website which may be of interest to those who wish to find hymn tunes suitable for use with various hymns.

Grace Hymns collects together a number of hymn tunes (as MIDI files) which we have used at Honiton Sovereign Grace Church, and also provides a 'map' matching hymns from 'Gadsby's' Hymnal to the various tunes provided.

I hope to expand on the list (of both hymns and tunes) as time allows, but this is a beginning.

Sunday 12th April

Please note that there will be no meeting at Awliscombe on Sunday 12th April. We trust that others too will find encouragement in hearing this ministry in Devon. May Christ be glorified in the preaching of His Gospel.

For the second year running our venue for the conference is the excellent Sidholme Hotel in Sidmouth Devon. This is situated about 30 minutes south of Honiton on the beautiful East Devon coastline. Not only will visitors be able to attend the meetings at the Conference, but for those who are travelling from afar and wish to make a break of it rooms are available at excellent rates at the hotel – this will also provide opportunity for fellowship with others staying at the hotel. Bookings can be made through the hotel website (http://www.sidholme.co.uk/) or by telephone - 01395 515104 (Mention the Sovereign Grace Conference when booking). Alternatively there are of course a number of other good hotels and B+Bs throughout the East Devon area (a quick search on the internet should find some).

Please pencil the dates in your diaries! He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD."

HYMN: 691 from Gadsby's Hymns

Prayer

Readings: Lamentations 1:1-12 and 3:22-31

HYMN:141 from Gadsby's Hymns

MESSAGE: "The Lord will not cast off for ever", Lamentations 3:31.

"It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD." Lamentations 3:26

The book of Lamentations, written by Jeremiah, is a beautifully composed and arranged piece of poetry written in the acrostic style. This, of course, is not immediately obvious in the English translation, but in the original Hebrew the 22 verses of chapters 1, 2 and 4 all begin with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. A similar thing occurs in chapter 3, but there it is every third verse that starts with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet, and thus the chapter is 66 verses long. Chapter 5, though not acrostic in style, is also 22 verses long.

If we divide the book into 22 verse sections, therefore, we do in fact have 7 sections, each of 22 verses, with the very centre of the book being full of hope and light, in contrast to the laments around it. Whilst the book may at first seem sorrowful and full of darkness in its descriptions of the sins of Israel and the Lord's chastisement of the people, it is in fact full of hope and encouragement and has been recorded in the scriptures for our consolation and comfort. For in the midst of what seems very dark, the central chapter rises up, as it were as the sun, as the light, in the midst of the darkness and casts its rays of light right across the book, to the very beginning of chapter 1 and the end of chapter 5.

It is this pool of light in the midst of darkness which brings such hope and comfort to those who share Jeremiah's lament over the state of the professing church, and over the darkness of their own hearts.

Darkness

This short book presents us with a very dark scene. It describes the rebellion and sin into which the professing people of God at the time had fallen:

"How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people!"

"The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts"

"Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions"

We see such darkness, such sin, described in these chapters. And we can see the same darkness in the world around us, in much of professing religion, and indeed in the darkness of our own hearts.

For it is in the heart where the problem lies. As Jeremiah writes in Jeremiah 17:9: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" And as Matthew 15:19,20 tells us "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man".

False religion fails to deal with the heart. It promises life, persuades people that they will be saved if they do this, or make this decision, but leaves them in the same state. Whatever they may profess, however they may present themselves to others, the reality is that the heart remains dark within. And there lies the problem.

Light

But I want to point you to the light! For Jeremiah writes that "The Lord will not cast off for ever"! And He won't. He will cause His people to discover the darkness of their own sin and their own hearts, and that may take a long time - but the Lord will not cast off for ever. He sends the light into the darkness and draws His own unto that light - and that light is CHRIST.

"And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all".
1 John 1:4-5

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." John 1:1-14

Yes the light came into the world, into the darkness, and that light is Christ. It is this light which we see rising up in the third chapter of Lamentations like the Sun of Righteousness rising up in the midst of the darkness and casting its beams across the whole book. God sent His own Son into this dark world, into the world which He created, but which turned aside into darkness and rebelled against Him. Yet, despite the rebellion, God sent His Son, the light, into the world which knew him not - to save His people from their sins.

But before that light came, God sent one before Him to point to Him. This is that voice crying in the wilderness (Isaiah 40:3). And what does that voice cry? "All flesh is as grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."

That voice prepares the way of the LORD. It comes into the darkness to sound the alarm. And it is when things are at their darkest that God sends deliverance. Christ came into the world when Israel was in a low state - dark. They searched the scriptures for in them they thought they had eternal life - but they did not come to Christ. And today, we have much religion - but much darkness.

Yet, into this dark world God sent His Son - the light. But the darkness comprehended it not. He came unto His own - the Jews, and His own rejected Him. The religious rejected Him. We all rejected Him.

For the light exposes the darkness.

But despite our rebellion the light still shone. Christ came, and He came to save! Though Lamentations shows the darkness of man's heart, and though we see the prophet's lament over that darkness, and by it, our Lord's lament over the darkness, nevertheless we see God's purpose to save. Despite the people's sin, God the Father gave Christ a people from before the foundation of this world, and though that people had fallen in Adam, and gone afar off, still Christ came to save them, for His love was set upon them - He loved them with an everlasting love.

Deliverance from darkness into light

Yes, Christ came, the Light, came, and He came to save His people. Not to attempt to save them, not to offer them salvation if they but will, but to really save them! He came to them in their lost estate and accomplished their salvation. He came to deliver them from darkness unto life.

He who is LIGHT came to deliver them who are dark, and He did it the only way it could be done - through death. He who was light was made dark. He who was righteous was made sin. He who was innocent was taken to a place called Golgotha, given up into the hands of the Romans by those who should have received Him, and yet who cried out ‘Away with this man!' ‘Crucify Him, Crucify Him!' Yes, He was taken to Golgotha, nailed to a tree and lifted up to die.

And being lifted up, He would draw all men unto Himself. All types, all classes, all races, all His own - all those given to Him by the Father, all for whom He would die. And He took their darkness, and was struck off in darkness, beaten for their sins, cast off by the Father because of their transgressions..... that they should be made light. That they should be delivered.

Yes, Christ died, that they should live! The Father bruised the Son at Calvary in order to deliver from darkness and bring into light.

And when God brings this light into the darkness of this world by His Spirit, and when He brings that light to shine into the dark hearts of His people, when He brings that people to hear the message of His saving grace by the gospel, the Spirit goes to that people and leads them to a place outside of Jerusalem where Christ suffered upon a cross between two transgressors, where He died - the Innocent, for the guilty. The Spirit brings them together with a great company to gather around and to sit at the foot of the cross and He says unto this people: "Behold, behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world"!

"Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth."

And surely the people which walked, which sat in darkness, have seen a great light! (Isaiah 9:2).

Amen

CLOSING HYMN: 401 Gadsby's Hymns

(I hope that provides a reasonable summary, from memory, of what the message covered).

Honiton Sovereign Grace Church - New Meetings

We are thankful to the Lord for recently opening the door to commence public meetings on Sunday mornings near Honiton, the first of which was held at Awliscombe Village Hall on Sunday Sunday 21st September at 10:45am.

A warm welcome is extended to all who wish to gather with us to worship the Lord Jesus Christ or who wish to hear more of Him and His truth as declared in His Gospel.

Honiton Sovereign Grace Church
Sundays 10:45am (D.V.)

Honiton Sovereign Grace Church is a gathering of God’s people, who meet under the sound of His Gospel, having come to know the forgiveness of their sins through the blood of Jesus Christ shed upon the cross. God has gathered us under this Gospel by His grace that we might meet as one people, united in Christ, who knowing the love of God as revealed in Christ to His people, seek to worship Him “in spirit and in truth“.

Having gathered to hear the preaching of the Gospel of Christ in Honiton, on Monday nights since 1999, we look to the Lord to bless the preaching of His word, as we now also meet in a public hall on Sunday mornings - this being the first day of the week, on which day Christ rose from the grave having conquered sin and death for His people in order to grant them everlasting life in Him.

These meetings are held at Awliscombe Village Hall at 10.45am on Sunday mornings. Awliscombe is just a couple of miles north of Honiton on the A373 to Cullompton and the village hall is easily found on the right hand side as you enter the village from the Honiton side. A large car park is situated right next to the hall, alongside the Awliscombe Inn, with ample parking space, and the hall has full disabled access, toilets and a kitchen.

The format of the meetings is simple, comprising the reading of God’s word (the Bible), prayer, and listening to the preaching of Christ in His Gospel.

(We would remind visitors to be mindful that this is a worship service in which we approach unto a Holy and Almighty God in due reverence. We approach unto Him through the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Head of His church, as set forth in 1 Corinthians 11.)

For more information click here.

...

At the first Sunday morning meeting of Honiton Sovereign Grace Church on 21st September we heard the following message preached.
“I was glad” Psalm 122:1 21-9-08 (Ian Potts)

Current Meetings - September/October 2008

The current dates of our meetings are listed below.

MONDAY September 8th 8pm
"Why Am I Here?" It brings a vital message from the heart of God, which is laid upon the heart of the preacher and directed to the heart of the hearer. A message which must be heard.

Last night we heard just such a message. This message deserves to be heard by all who profess the name of Christ.

So do listen to "I Never Knew You" Matthew 7:21-23 by Henry Mahan.

And when you’ve heard it, have your friends and family listen too.

Michael, Satan and the body of Moses

At our last Monday meeting we heard a message by Don Fortner on the error of Balaam, from the book of Jude. Although I have this message on disc, I have yet to be able to find a copy of it available online for download. So my apologies to those who would like to 'listen in' to what we've heard at the meetings.

However, in reading Jude, a question was asked at the meeting about the meaning of 'the body of Moses' in verse 9. How encouraging then to come across the following message preached by Don Fortner on the Friday following, at the conference in Lantana.

For the answer to the question, have a listen to 'Michael, Satan and the body of Moses' (Jude 9) by Don Fortner.

Current Meetings - June 2008

The current dates of our meetings are listed below (actual messages postpone from previous dates).

MONDAY June 16th 8pm
"The Error of Balaam" Jude 1:11 (video)
Don Fortner (Pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Danville, Kentucky.)

MONDAY June 2nd 8pm
"I Never Knew You" Matthew 7:21-23 (audio)
Henry Mahan (Former Pastor of 13th Street Baptist Church, Ashland, Kentucky.)

Click here for details of our previous meetings.

The Lord's Supper

"For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. We trust that others too will find encouragement in hearing this ministry in Devon. May Christ be glorified in the preaching of His Gospel.

Our venue for this year’s conference is the excellent Sidholme Hotel in Sidmouth Devon. Bookings can be made through the hotel website (http://www.sidholme.co.uk/ ) or by telephone - 01395 515104 (Mention the Sovereign Grace Conference when booking). Alternatively there are of course a number of other good hotels and B+Bs throughout the East Devon area (a quick search on the internet should find some).

Further Details:

Tuesday 1st April 2008 at 8.00pm D.V.
Venue: Sidholme Hotel Elysian Fields, Sidmouth, Devon EX10 8UJ

Wednesday 2nd April 2008 at 8.00pm D.V.
Venue: Sidholme Hotel Elysian Fields, Sidmouth, Devon EX10 8UJ

Tea and coffee will be provided following the meetings and there will be a good selection of books, tapes and free material available on the bookstall.

Please be sure to mark the dates in your diary!

For further details see file:///C:/Program%20Files/Turbo-Mailer/www.graceandtruthonline.com or email Ian Potts at ianpotts@graceandtruthonline.com

(Why not download the PDF Sovereign Grace Conference 2008 Flyer here and print it out for display on your noticeboard?)

About Don Fortner

Don Fortner has pastored and faithfully declared the gospel of God's free grace in Christ at Grace Baptist Church of Danville Kentucky for over twenty-five years. I know that statement is contrary to the popular opinion of religious people. But is it consistent with the Word of God and the experience of God's people? Here are five facts which demonstrate that it is.

1. GOD MEETS WITH SINNERS IN SAVING MERCY IN THE ASSEMBLY OF HIS SAINTS FOR WORSHIP (Acts 2:1, 37-41). Generally God saves his sheep in the place of public worship, where the gospel is preached. Sinners in need of mercy should seek mercy where it is always found. And mercy is always found in the house of God.

2. THE PUBLIC ASSEMBLY OF THE CHURCH IS THE GATHERING OF THE FAMILY OF GOD (Eph. 3:15). Every true local church is a family of saved sinners. And family members need each other, comfort each other, and help each other, because they love each other.

3. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST MEETS WITH HIS PEOPLE WHEN THEY ASSEMBLE IN HIS NAME (Matt. 18:20). Like Simeon of old, God's people come together seeking Christ. And they always find him in the house of God, the assembly of those who worship him.

4. THE ASSEMBLED CONGREGATION OF THE LORD IS THE PLACE WHERE GOD DEALS WITH MEN. Each local congregation of believers is the house and temple of God (I Tim. 3:15; I Cor. 3:16-17). God reveals his will, gives out his Word, shows his glory, instructs his people, and bestows his blessings in his temple.

5. THE NEGLECT OF PUBLIC WORSHIP IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARD TOTAL APOSTACY (Heb. 10:23-31). Those who willfully neglect the assembly of God's saints, though they may be thoroughly orthodox in doctrine, tread under foot the Son of God, count the blood of the covenant a useless thing, and despise the Spirit of grace. Their forsaking of public worship is proof that they never knew Christ (I John 2:19).

Don Fortner

....

Have a listen also to The Importance of Public Worship by Henry Mahan.

Afflicted, Saved, Redeemed and Carried - We thank the Lord for his visit, for the warm fellowship enjoyed with both Pastor Fortner and his wife Shelby and for his faithful preaching of the Gospel of Christ in this area.

Both meetings were very well attended, with the ministry being much appreciated by many of our brothers and sisters in Christ (some of whom travelled quite some distance in order to be present) who expressed their joy at being able to meet with one another for fellowship at such meetings. The Lord is greatly to be praised.

Listen to the two messages delivered by Don Fortner in Honiton here.

"As he is, so are we in this world" 1 John 4:17 by Don Fortner

"He hath done all things well" Mark 7:37 by Don Fortner

Our thanks and appreciation go to all who attended, to the Lord's servant for faithfully preaching Christ to us, and most of all to our Sovereign God who so blessed the preaching of His word to the souls of His people on this memorable and blessed occasion.

"The Heeding Heart" Acts 16:13-15

The following message which can be downloaded in Mp3 format was heard at our meeting on the 8th October 2007. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith" Romans 1:16-17.

Most professing Christians would also claim, with Paul, not to be ashamed of the gospel. However in this day and age of great confusion the question we must ask ourselves is, Do we really know what the gospel is? Well Paul certainly did, and knowing the power of it he was bold and unashamed in its proclamation. I’ve heard one preacher break down Romans 1:16 into five helpful headings. Let’s consider the verse under these headings to draw out five clear aspects of the gospel which the Holy Spirit reveals which are essential to its character and important for us to see.

Firstly, the gospel is DEFINITIVE

It is the “gospel of Christ”. The gospel is not something abstract, something vague, something to be guessed at. It isn’t a collection of testimonies or subjective experiences. It is defined. It is the gospel, the good news of Christ. As Romans 1:1-3 states “the gospel of God… concerning his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord”. The gospel is God’s message concerning the Person and the Work of His eternal Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. It declares Him, it sets Him forth. And any message, any ‘gospel’ which fails to set forth Christ, in all His fullness, is no gospel, and has no power to save.

Secondly, the gospel is OBJECTIVE

Paul states “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation”. The Gospel is an objective message, not subjective. IT is the power of God unto salvation. What is? The Gospel is. For the Gospel, in and of itself, when proclaimed by God the Holy Spirit through those whom He sends to preach it, is the power of God unto salvation.

Paul here does not say that the Spirit is the power of God unto salvation, but that the Gospel is. It is of course true that except the Spirit apply the word inwardly to the hearts of His hearers, they will remain dead in trespasses and sins, yet nevertheless the Spirit does not work in isolation. The Gospel is the power of the Spirit, His sword, which He uses to save sinners, to quicken them unto life in Christ. The Gospel itself, as an objective message, is the power of God unto salvation, and it is by the preaching of this objective message that God is pleased to save sinners: “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” 1 Peter 1:23-25

Thirdly, the gospel is EFFECTIVE

Yes, the gospel is “the power of God unto salvation”. The power of God. It is effective, it saves. There is no other power like it, and yet to the world, to them that perish, to the wise in their own understanding it is ‘foolishness’. As 1 Corinthians 1:18 states “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness” and yet “unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

What makes the gospel so effective, so powerful? Romans 1:17 tells us: “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith”. That makes it powerful. For here is a message that declares that though all men are sinners, though all fell in their father Adam into sin, death and ruin, though all sin daily being at enmity to God, though man stands in his fallen nature guilty before God, deserving of eternal wrath and damnation, nevertheless God, in His great love, sent His Son to take His people’s sins away through His own death, to deliver them from judgment and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and everlasting life, which He freely gives them by grace (2 Corinthians 5:21). And this justifying righteousness is what is revealed in the gospel, hence its power to save.

Fourthly, the gospel is ELECTIVE

The gospel is “the power of God unto salvation”. Not of man. The gospel is God’s - it is His message concerning His work in the Person of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died to “save His people from their sins” Matthew 1:21. This gospel was God’s to purpose, God’s to perform, is God’s to proclaim, and is God’s to apply. Consistently, and repeatedly, throughout its message the gospel clearly sets forth the salvation of that people of God, chosen in Christ “before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4) who have been “predestinated … unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will”. This people, described in the scriptures as God’s “sheep” (John 10:15) are those for whom Christ died, and none else, and are those who are saved, not according to their will but God’s (John 1:13, John 15:16). Yes, the gospel, the power of God unto salvation, being God’s to apply to whom He wills, is by definition, elective (See Romans 9).

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” 1 Peter 2:9

And fifthly, the gospel is REDEMPTIVE

Finally Romans 1:16 declares the effect of the gospel – the redemption of God’s people. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation”. The Gospel saves, and it does so, because Christ laid down His life for His own in order to redeem them from their sins. He died in their place, bearing their sins “in His own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24), suffering under the outpouring of God’s wrath against sin, that through His death, by the shedding of His blood, they would be delivered from death, from sin, and from condemnation and have everlasting life in Him (Romans 3:24, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:14, Hebrews 9:12).

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” 1 Peter 1:18-19

No wonder then that Paul was not ashamed of this gospel! For he knew its power, he knew what it was to be redeemed, to have his sins forgiven, he knew that it was God who saved him, by His will, not Paul’s (see Acts 9), he knew the glorious revelation of the righteousness of God in the gospel, put to his account, he knew what it was to be born again by the mighty operation of the Holy Spirit, and most of all he knew the Saviour who loved him, and gave himself for him, the Lord Jesus Christ….

But do you? Do you know this gospel? Has it been revealed to you? Do you believe it? Is this the gospel of which, like Paul, you can say that you are not ashamed?

...

Have a listen to God’s message of salvation in the gospel on the Video Page of Grace and Truth Online.

"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Revelation 14:6-7

http://www.graceandtruthonline.com

Current Meetings - October 2007

The current dates of our meetings are listed below.

MONDAY OCTOBER 8th 8pm
"The Heeding Heart" Acts 16:13-15 (audio)
Stephen Bignall

MONDAY OCTOBER 29th 8pm
"Behold My Hands" Luke 24:13-35 (video)
Don Fortner

Stephen Bignall is the pastor of the Campus Church, Welywn Garden City, England
Donald S.
